The Recent Acquisitions of VSR & Delcam Make It a Serious Player
It’s pretty clear what Autodesk’s goal is; World Domination!
It’s got it’s fingers in every industry that uses software for engineering and design. In Automotive, Autodesk’s acquisition of Alias, gave it a foot in the door, adding Class-A Surfacing tools to their MCAD portfolio, and in many countries, Alias is the industry standard for surfacing.
CATIA & NX have long been the dominant players in these industries and rightly so, they have been servicing them since the 80’s and Autodesk have had to play catch up. So what did Autodesk need to do to become the 3rd major player in the space?
2D Detailing: Check – AutoCAD.
3D Mechanical Solid Modelling: Check – Inventor.
Data Management: Check – Vault.
Simulation: Check – Autodesk Simulation Portfolio covers Mechanical, CFD, Composites & Injection Molding.
Visualisation: Check – VRED is a real-time renderer specifically for Automotive and Showcase, 3ds Max & Maya are all awesome.
PLM: Check – PLM 360 is cloud based, fully customisable and sensibly priced.
Class-A Surfacing: Check – Alias and, on November 4, 2013, Autodesk announced the acquisition of VSR (Virtual Shape Research).
CAM: Check – HSMWorks was acquired October, 2012 and on the 7th of November, 2013, Autodesk announced their intent to acquire Delcam.
With customers like Holden Special Vehicles, Aston Martin and Tesla Motors on the books, it seems the sky is the limit… can’t wait to see the flying car!
