Autodesk Releases Advance Steel for Structural Detailing

3D Model2Built on the familar AutoCAD, Autodesk Advanced Steel brings a lot of features and functionality missing in Autodesk’s portfolio of design products. Anyone who had experience with AutoCAD Structural detailing knew of it’s limitations, so to have this product released is a step in the right direction.

When you get Advance Steel you get also get the full version of AutoCAD too which already has great direct editing 2D/3D design tools and superior detailing and annotation capabilities, with features that many CAD package lack let alone structural detailing packages.

Advance Steel builds on that with parametric connections (members, plates, joints, joists, etc.), a massive customisable library with almost any standard, NC file connectionssupport for Beam Line Machines and etching/scribing, clash detection, project/document management, bill of materials and interoperability with Revit (import, Export, Synchronise), Navisworks (The export to Autodesk Navisworks contains all Advance Steel objects and their tokens), Robot Structures, import/export IFC, CIS/2, SDNF, PSS, STD and export KISS and PML along with all the other major formats that AutoCAD supports.

3D Modeling

3D ModelGetting started is as simple as clicking on the grid, choose your origin and dimension it out. Choose your structural member. You can use the auto-connection tool, input your own connection or build one up.

In addition to structural steel, the program also has tools and library for stairs, railing, cage ladders, joists, sheet metal and folded plate work too.

2D Detailing

When you get Advance Steel you get also get the full version of AutoCAD too which already has great 2D/3D design tools and superior detailing and annotation Drawing2capabilities, with features that many CAD package lack let alone structural detailing packages, however, Advance Steel builds on that with specific detailin tools for structural steel detailing.

It has One-Click buttons for a Bill of Materials with a report editor to customise or use existing templates. The same goes to generate NC files too.

Management Tools

Mgmt toolsAutodesk has put in a Management Tools Console, to customise sizes, standards, bolts, shear studs, anchors and editing in the way of tables and converting existing databases too, which is a nice addition.

Advantages Over Other Structural Detailing Packages

It looks like it does what you would expect from a modern structural detailing package, with the added benefits of AutoCAD’s capabilities, compatibility with DWG, Revit and Navisworks, being able to analyse the model in Robot Structures, sending it to Showcase or 3ds Max for stunning visualisation or to the cloud and use AutoCAD 360 and BIM 360’s design and collaboration tools.
