3D Printer Review: Battle of Continuous Fiber Composites

3D Printer Review: Battle of Continuous Fiber Composites

With so many choices for 3D printers on the market, few can deliver strength-to-weight ratios like continuous fiber 3D printers.

Using FDM Fused Deposition Modeling (aka FFF) technology, these 3D printers lay continuous fibers into the base filament of the 3D printed part to produce strong lightweight parts that rival metal.

There is a couple of competitors in the market and Anisoprint with over 10 years of composite manufacturing experience offering a clear alternative to the rest.

The name Anisoprint is derived from anisotropy, to exhibit different parameters of stiffness and strength in different directions (e.g. horizontal and vertical).

Understanding the differences between Anisoprint and their main competitors can be confusing, however, understanding how traditional composite fiber parts are manufactured gives you insight into how these manufacturing processes were adapted to 3D printing technology.

Anisoprint Markforged composite 3D printer review

Composite Manufacturing

Without getting too technical, producing composite parts is laying in fiber, such as carbon fiber, into polymer matrix layer by layer and laminating them together: and it is the way these 3D Printers laminate that is the most distinguishing characteristic between them.

The type of fiber and the volume of fiber in a composite can vary, for instance, when manufacturing aerospace composites the amount is as high as 60%.

3D Printer Fiber Extrusion Methods

Both Anisoprint and the competition use a dual extrusion technique where there is a base filament and continuous fiber, the latter can be customized in the slicing software.

The way the competitor system extrudes the fiber is a prepreg placement technique: heating a roll of filament fiber which has about 28% fiber and the remaining being a thermoplastic and by heating the filament as it extrudes, it bonds to the base thermoplastic filament, usually a Nylon or Nylon mixed with short fibers of carbon fiber and limited colour choices.

Anisoprint use a unique co-extrusion technique, where prepreg (fiber impregnated with thermoset) and thermoplastic matrix and fed into the extruder simultaneously. The extruder heats them, making the matrix soft and elastic and the fiber sticky and less rigid, then the blend is extruded as one single composite material.

Its this patented co-extrusion technique using preimpregnated (with thermoset) fiber that gives it the ability to bond to a wide range of thermoplastics.

Composite Co-Extrusion

Anisoprint composite co-extrusion
Anisoprint composite co-extrusion
Anisoprint Diagram
Anisoprint Diagram

The benefit of using Anisoprint co-extrusion is adaptive 3D printing: where the volume ratio change or amount of matrix and fiber can be modified, if required.

Anisoprint co-extrusion allows 3D printer users to create parts with fiber volumes up to 60% (which meets the demands of aerospace production), 3D print internal lattice structures with continuous fiber (not just base filament), make use of adaptive layer thickness, and make many other flexible choices to lay continuous fiber.

Using prepreg plus thermoplastic instead of dry fiber plus thermoplastic creates an open system, giving the user the ability to print with any type of base filament or colour within the specifications of the printer, such as PLA, Nylon, TPU, ABS, Pet-G, or composites such as a thermoplastic with short fibers to provide characteristics for specific applications and conditions, such as high or low temperature, friction, UV, chemical resistance, anti-microbial/bacterial or flame retardant.

Materials

polymaker polylite pla filament sample 4718 1 p Moving at the Speed of Business

Many other continuous fiber 3D printer manufacturers offer only a limited range of their proprietary materials which can be limited to the application and colour selection. While Anisoprint have their own materials as well, they offer an open system, so users have a wide range for choice when it comes to material applications such as Nylon, PLA, PET-G, Polycarbonate, PC-FR, TPU, etc. and of course any colour choice that the filament comes in, so you can print in the right material for the right application.

Aura Slicing Software

Aura slicing software allows the user to use the flexibility of anisoprinting technology to the fullest. With a wide range of adjustable parameters that are unique in the market, Aura can fully control the process of printing to meet all customer demands. For those who wish to simply choose a material and print, there is a number of preset optimized plug and play profiles for various materials that can produce an excellent finished part with no manual input or parameter adjustment.

Anisoprint aura masks
Anisoprint Aura - Masking

Masking

A mask is an additional model that is added to the work area to intersect with the base model, changing the model’s internal structure in the intersection volume.

This type of marking intersection serves for adjusting fiber and support parameters that are different from those selected for the rest of the model.

You can see the base model (grey) and the mask model (orange) in the picture below. The base part volume inside the mask will be printed with special settings for the mask.

Layer Thickness

Aura software allows users to adapt layer thickness, for instance, a user may want a nice surface finish and 3D print a layer of 50um around the surfaces and on the inside 3D print 200um or higher where surface finish is not an issue, this hack increases the speed of the print.

Fiber Directions

Competitors’ slicing software has the option for linear or concentric printing of continuous fibers.

Anisoprint Aura software gives the user the option for a combination of:

  • Linear
  • Concentric (with an option to choose separately, concentric fibers for inner and outer perimeters)
  • Curvilinear trajectories
  • Lattices

These combinations provide users with the flexibility to lay fibers in the right directions giving maximum strength and directional force.

Lattices

The ability to 3D print various lattice structures with continuous fiber gives parts strength in the right places, speed to print and lighter parts, providing load distribution along the 1D ribs, making the part 2-3x stronger compared to the one with plastic lattices. Compared to printing on a competitor’s machine that cannot print continuous fiber lattices such part will also be lighter.

Anisoprint provides users with flexible options for lattice patterns:

  • Solid
  • Rhombic
  • Isogrid
  • anisogrid

Fiber printing (Microns)

Aura allows 3D printing of continuous fibers of up to 350um whereas the competing 3D printing systems only 3D print up to 200um.

Conclusion

While on the surface, composite 3D printers seem to be the same and do similar functions, when you look at the extrusion hardware and slicing software in the desktop range and the motors and other components in  the industrial range, differences are quite contrast.

If you are looking for greater continuous fiber choices, then Anisoprint may not be the right fit, however, the fact that it can use any base plastic, whether it be rigid or flexible, offers greater choice and eliminates the need for a wider range of continuous fiber.

The Anisoprinting system gives the user basic settings like the competition to simply print and go, or for advanced use, the freedom and the ability to manipulate the direction of fibers, lattice structures to produce lighter parts and the choice in the right base filament to fit the desired application with a bigger build volume to print larger parts.

In the industrial range, the Prom is a true industrial size and built for 24×7 use with 4x tool changers and servi motors, while the alternative is small and doesn’t use the same industrial components but compensates with a laser scanning tool.

All composite 3D printers with continuous fiber will give you strong, lightweight parts that rival replacing metal, it’s just that the Anisoprint has the hardware and software to be to steer the continuous fibers with greater flexibility, which caters to the benefits of composite fiber manufacturing.

What is Fiber Steering? 3D Anisoprinting with Continuous Fibers

Continuous Fiber 3D Printers are great but what’s the point of 3D printing long fibers if you can’t control the direction of the fibers in the way you need them to be?

It’s a bit like having a car with a that can only drive straight.

Fiber Steering Composites - Controlling Fiber Trajectories

Fiber steering is the ability to control the trajectories of fiber reinforcement.

It is one of the biggest advantages of continuous fiber 3D printing technology. This allows you to produce optimal composites for a given load without increasing the weight, wich impossible with conventional composite manufacturing technologies such as composite layup or winding.

Anisoprint fiber steering 1 Moving at the Speed of Business

FFiber Steering Composites - Reinforcement Where You Need It

For example, you can effectively reinforce the parts with holes. It’s well known that holes are stress concentrators that significantly reduce the strength of structural elements. The main goal was to find a method for rational reinforcement of such parts.

Anisoprint fiber steering 2 Moving at the Speed of Business

The sample was reinforced with curved paths corresponding to the load distribution, without increasing the weight. Traditionally, to increase the strength of an element, a part thickness is increased that leads to an increase of the part weight.

As a result of a specific layup of the reinforcing fiber in the sample, the stress concentrations are removed from the holes and the load evenly distributed over the entire part.

Anisoprint fiber steering 3 Moving at the Speed of Business

Fiber Steering Comppsites - Applications

Fiber steering has been the subject of intense study. In the article “Manufacturing and Testing of A Fibre Steered Panel with A Large Cut-out, Composite Structures (2017)” described an experiment that showed that fiber steering is effective for a panel that is the lower wing skin with a large hole.

Anisoprint fiber steering 4 Moving at the Speed of Business

Three panels, one for each type of laminate, are built from thermoset prepreg material using automated fiber placement. One of the panels was made by fiber steering, the other two were with straight fibers: one with quasi-isotropic and the second with constant stiffness.

All panels are tested in pure tension. The failure loads, failure modes, and weights of the tested panels are compared. The results indicate that the variable stiffness laminate (fiber steering) is capable of sustaining loads of up to 2 times, before failure, then the constant stiffness and quasi-isotropic laminates of equal weight.

Design Consulting supplies the complete range of Anisoprint continuous fiber desktop and industrial 3D printer range that provides an open system to print in virtually any plastic material and re-inforce the 3D print with continuous basalt or carbon fiber.

3D Printing Non-planar continuous fiber reinforced composites

Anisoprint blog non planar robot Moving at the Speed of Business

3D Printing Non-Planar Continuous Fiber Reinforced Composites

Most 3D printing processes are actually 2.5D but what does that really mean if it is a 3D printer? The conventional process of 3D printing is laying material on top of each other on a parallel plane (usually the print bed), and as layers build, it results in a three-dimensional object.

Planar Vs Non-Planar - Planar Continuous Fiber 3D Printing

In traditional 3D printers, moving parts are most often either the print bed (or table), or the print head, or both of them, such as in the Anisoprint Composer Desktop series of continuous fiber 3D printers. Even though the table and the print head move along the x, y, z axes, the layers are still stacking in the parallel plane, and each subsequent layer is parallel to the previous one.

Anisoprint Composer Planar arrows Moving at the Speed of Business

Planar Vs Non-Planar - Continuous Fiber 3D Printing Limitations

Both FFF (plastic) and continuous fiber 3D printing have a number of limitations. Since the layers are stacked parallel to each other, it is not possible to reinforce parts in two planes at the same time and therefore, the part can only be reinforced in the same plane.

For example, in the parts pictured below, it is not possible to effectively strengthen parts using conventional 3D printers.

Anisoprint non planar blog brackets Moving at the Speed of Business

The second limitation is in the difficulty with printing curved shape models because the extruder is fixed to the XY plane and cannot move out of these planes so that the nozzle remains always perpendicular to the point where the material is laid out.

Anisoprint blog continuous fibers Moving at the Speed of Business

Continuous Fiber Non-Planar 3D Printing

There is a way for ‘’true 3D printing’’ with continuous fibers by using an Anisoprint 6-axis robot that allows reinforcing parts of any shape in different planes.

The robot includes a 6-axis robot arm and an end-effector printing with continuous fiber. The robot’s axis allow free movement in 6-axis to print complex shapes, without additional supports, molds and tools.

What’s New in Maya 2022

Maya 2022 Moving at the Speed of Business

What's New in Autodesk Maya 2022

Maya 2022 brings seamless USD integration, improvements to animation, rigging and modelling toolsets and the latest version of Arnold.

USD Plug-in for Maya

Universal Scene Description (USD) support in Maya is now available:

Animation Ghosting

In previous versions of Maya when you wanted to change the way ghosts appeared with multiple meshes selected, each of their attributes had to be edited individually in the Attributes editor.

The new Ghosting editor gives you an interface to apply Ghost attributes individually or as a group.

Component Tags for Deformers

Component Tags let you create node-independent named groups to deform geometry, letting you modify tag membership on the fly.

Using Component Tags replaces the groupID node previously needed to transform vertices, as well as cleans up the Node Editor by eliminating Tweak nodes. Component Tag nodes are automatically created with a subset of components selected whenever you create a deformer.

Create and edit Component Tag membership with the Component Tags table

Python 3

In Windows and Linux, Maya starts in Python 3 by default and available on all platforms

Bifrost 2.2.1.0 plug-in

The new Bifrost plugin has simulation workflow enhancements, e.g. resume simulation from cached frame, spawn new particles and low-resolution Aero refinement.

Graph Editor Improvements

Peak Removal Filter to clean up noisy animation data

Added to the Graph Editor Curves menu, is a new animation filter, the Peak Removal Filter.

Similar to the MotionBuilder filter of the same name, the Peak Removal Filter lets you clean up unwanted spikes and peaks in your animation curves.

Smooth filter (Gaussian) for curve "noise" reduction

Another new MotionBuilder filter, the Smooth filter (Gaussian) has been added to the Graph Editor Curves menu, to let you remove jittering and noise in curve channels. See Smooth filter (Gaussian) options for details.

New Display Option

A new Show Animated Shapes option in the Graph Editor List menu lets you set whether the Graph Editor displays all curves downstream from a node, or just the animation curve of the selected node. This is useful if you have custom rigs with specialized connections or when animators only want to view the transforms for a selected object.

Preserve Tangent Type Now for Added Keys Moving at the Speed of Business
Preserve Tangent Type for Added keys: on (default)

Preserve Tangent Type: Now for Added Keys

The Preserve Tangent Type option, formerly only for Inserted Keys, is now available for Added Keys.

Previously, when you added a key to a curve, by default, the new key respected the tangents on either side of the key. This ensured that added keys did not change the neighbouring tangents type while still changing the shape of the curve. This behaviour continues to be the default setting.

Preserve Tangent Type Now for Added Keys OFF Moving at the Speed of Business
Preserve Tangent Type for Added keys: off

Customise Key Selection

You can now shrink the active selection area of keys in the Graph Editor graph view by using the Min key selection size in the Animation (Settings) preferences.

Sweep Mesh

Meshes can be created from simple curves using the Sweep Mesh feature using various profiles letting you create a wide array organic and hard surface forms like:

  • Tubes
  • Pipes
  • Ribbons
  • Cables
  • Ropes
  • Roads
  • Horns
  • Hair Cards
  • Architectural features (e.g. crownmoulding)

Security Preferences

Flag specific commands or plugin locations to be blocked when Maya loads them in the Preferences window.

Rokoko Motion Library Plug-in

Drag and drop professional mocap assets into your scenes, leveraging on assets built for big productions like Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Doctor Strange, Assassin’s Creed, and Horizon Zero Dawn in your own projects.

Cached Playback Improvements

In previous versions of Maya, you could turn on Caching support for dynamics nodes such as Boss, or Nucleus. Now, Cached Playback for dynamics is on by default and dynamics simulation content caching is shown in a separate pass that appears as a pink status line in the Time Slider just above the Animation Cache Status line.

New Solidify Deformer

The new Solidify deformer lets you create areas of geometry that appear more solid on deformed geometry, which lets you define rigid parts of a character’s clothes, such as buttons or a belt buckle.

It works by analysing deformed sections of geometry and dividing it into separate polygon islands. Each polygon island is then replaced by the original geometry moved and blended into place based on the approximation of the matrix derived from the deformed vertices.

OpenColorIO v2

With an emphasis on visual effects and computer animation, the OpenColor IO v2 colour management system has been integrated into Maya 2022

Start up Experience Improvements

A number of improvements have been made to Maya’s startup experience, including:

  • Faster start up and quit times
  • No longer steals focus during start up
  • Remembering the state of the Output Window
  • Ability to copy specific preferences from a previous install
  • A new, more informative splash screen

New Morph Deformer

The new Morph deformer is like a GPU-Accelerated version of the BlendShape deformer.

With a GPU-Accelerated version of the BlendShape deformer, it provides simple AB morphs, partial to whole mesh morphs (or whole mesh to partial), as well as the ability to incorporate legacy CPU deformers in deformation chains without blocking the rest of the chain from GPU evaluation.

It features:

Assemblies - Instance Properties

Instance properties enables you to assign properties to individual component instances.

Assigned properties are stored in the parent assembly.

Unlike iProperties, Instance Properties don’t affect the referenced component files. Instance Properties are assigned to individual component instances only and can override custom iProperties.

Instance Properties are available in annotations such as balloons, leader notes and parts lists.

Simplification Improvements

The new simplification command provides:

  • IP removal prior to export
  • All settings are moved to the property panel
  • Built-in presets
  • Integrated Inventor to Revit workflow

This new command replaces both the shrinkwrap and shrinkwrap substitute commands.

Interoperability - Inventor + Revit

2022 allow users for the first time to export Inventor models to the Revit rvt project file format.

The simplification tool gives users the ability to select only the components and features that are required for export into Revit.

A Revit Exports browser folder is placed in the Inventor model browser. It is populated with a node for the exported model.  As long as the model is maintained in the specified path, you can edit, preview, open in Revit or an associated application, or update the RVT model.

Interoperability - Inventor + Fusion 360

In addition to Revit interoperability, the new Inventor 2022 release includes a ‘Send to Fusion’ button making it easier to send data to Fusion 360 and Fusion Team.

Upon selection of the Send to Fusion 360 command, files will automatically get uploaded to your Fusion Team account.

In Fusion, you can make edits to your model geometry without changing the part in Inventor, this ideal when you need to prepare a part for CNC machining, 3D printing, or generative design.

Interoperability - Additional Workflows

Autodesk has also added QIF 3.0 support for PMI data and via the TAsk Scheduler, JT Export.

Productivity and Performance

The Autodesk Inventor team has continued to focus or Model, Drawing and Graphic Performance.

Parts, assemblies, drawings have all been enhanced year after year to deliver an efficient experience for everyone who works on complex parts and very large assemblies.

For those who enjoy editing parts while working in the assembly environment, you will find several performance improvements while editing sketches and visibility improvements.  GPU’s are now better utilised for visual styles like displaying wireframe and silhouette edges and opening and closing documents is faster than ever.

Productivity - User Interface

Fillets and Property Palette

The fillet command has been moved to the property panel and these panels can be docked anywhere on your screen.

Assembly Constraints

New options allow users to visualise what is under constrained.

There’s a status filter which you can select to show the constraint state in the browser.

Measure Command

The new installer and online deployment builder, making it simpler to configure and launch.

Tube and Pipe

Angle attribute is now exported when saving one or multiple runs to ISOGEN .pcf files .

iLogic support for Model State

iLogic is expanded to support the following Model State workflows:

  • ThisDoc.Document support for Model State In a component occurrence of a model state document, the existing ThisDoc.Document property returns the member document.
    • The ThisDoc.Document property is expanded to support returning the member document when running in a component occurrence of a model state document.
    • The new ThisDoc.FactoryDocument property returns the factory document when running either in a top-level document or in an assembly component. In a component occurrence document, this returns the associated factory document. In a top-level document, this returns the same object as ThisDoc.Document.
    • In a drawing, the new ThisDrawing.ModelFactoryDocument property returns the factory document for the first model view (or nothing if there is no model view).
    • In a drawing view, the new ICadDrawingView.ModelFactoryDocument property returns the factory document for that view (or nothing if it is not a model view).
  • There is a new event called Model State Activated now available in the Event Triggers dialog box. This trigger occurs when a model state is activated. Use this trigger to run a rule in the document in which the event occurred.
  • New function lets you add a component in a specified model state

A new function called AddWithModelState is now available on the Components object (IManagedComponents interface). This function adds a managed occurrence of a part or subassembly.

Note: Capture Current State on an existing component that includes a model state, in turn creates code that includes AddWithModelState.
  • iLogic edit-in-place and model states

There are some restrictions on what you can do with iLogic rules when you are editing a model state component in place. In a model state, when a component member file is being in-place edited within an assembly:

    • You can edit, run, and suppress rules.
    • You can’t add or delete rules.

There is no change to edit-in-place support for components that aren’t model state components: You can add an iLogic rule:

    • From the top level document.
    • At the sub-component level in the in-place-edit environment.
  • Instructions to Modify an Occurrence Parameter with a Model State

Access the steps here: To Modify an Occurrence Parameter with a Model State.

  • Use the new Instance property snippets to read and create Instance Properties.
  • There is a new event named Any User Parameter Change in the Event Triggers dialog box. This event is triggered when you change the value of a User parameter.

Dark Theme

The Dark Theme that was introduced in the 2021 release has been fully implemented in 2022, including in the iLogic Rule Editor

Drawings

You can now change the look of shaded views in Drawings by changing  the lighting style.

There are new drawing view options available to repurpose the camera views and 3D annotations created in the 3D model.Centerlines and center marks with extended lines now break when intersecting with dimensions, making it easier to read the dimension value.

Installation and Deployment

The measure command is updated to use a property panel style and has Done and Retry buttons to improve workflow and productivity. Measure in an assembly has a tool palette for quick access to selection filtering and a loop modifier.

You can now create a deployment that includes your customized settings in the iLogic Configuration dialog box.

3devo Sika Customer Story

sika 3devo setup scaled 1 Moving at the Speed of Business

Sika make custom 3D printing filaments with 3devo

Sika Automotive, a leading OEM supplier for automotive components, needed to streamline prototyping and pre-series productive for their innovative heat-expandable acoustic inserts. They incorporated the 3devo Composer 350 filament maker into their in-house 3D printing and manufacturing process which was capable of extruding heat-reactive, low-temp materials.

3devo sika acoustic development 1030x412 2 Moving at the Speed of Business
Sika Text screengrab Moving at the Speed of Business

Background

Sika Automotive manufactures bonding, sealing, damping and reinforcing solutions for the automotive industry with lightweight, robust and customised chassis components for OEMs across Europe. Thier acoustic inserts and precision engineered with proprietary materials. Using the 3devo Composer 350, Sika are able to process heat-reactive, highly expandable thermoplastic material into 3D filament, streamlining their manufacturing and prototyping processes by being able to additive manufacture prototypes in the same material in production.

3devo Composer 350 Sika Case Study TP Moving at the Speed of Business

The Challenge

Sika’s cavity sealers typically go through 5-10 design iterations and as their products are injected molded, prototypes were costly to produce and design cycles were lengthy waiting on molds to be produced, tested and re-iterated, so they wanted a cost effective solution to be able to prototype materials and needed a solution that could process medium melt flow index polymers without changing its chemical composition.

The Solution

To be able to 3D print their cavity sealers, they needed a filament maker that could sucessfully process their SikaBaffle material, which was already available in its pellet form. With alow melting point of 90 degrees, this made it incompatible with most extruders, except for the 3devo Composer 350,  which is sucessfully able to extrude the material and create filament.

By creating their own filament, Sika are able to reduce the lead times by 90% being able to get the saame process done in 2-5 days instead of 4-8 weeks.

XML Import and Export

Exporting usernames and values can be done via XML from the parameters dialog box, which is handy for iLogic users.

Multi-Open from Drawing Environment

The ability to multi-select parts, assemblies or presentations from the browser and open those files with a right click has been added which will all be opened in a separate window.

Right-Click > Align Section View

You can now align section views by right-clicking and choosing the command which is also available inside the Section View dialog box as a radio button.

Revit Interoperability

The support of choosing which Revit categories to import has now been added to the new Revit AnyCAD functionality in 2021.

Other enhancements have been with the progress bar will appear on the same monitor as Inventor and Revit files with non-ASCII characters will update properly.

Frame Generator

There continues to be improvements to Frame Generator with two new options added in this release. The first one is the ability to know if files are being saved outside your project before saving and the second option is a full path being displayed before saving.

The trim/Extend tool select is now active after you clikc apply, commands such as Insert/Miter/Notch are disabled in Weldment sub-environments.

The tool tip and property panel text has been unified and the cut for end treatments is now correct as the G_L length is now calculated by the frame algorithm and not by start/end planes which caused incorrect lengths when frames were modified.

For the full ist of updates, please refer to the Autodesk Inventor help file.

IMAGINIT CLARITY BIM 360 Moving at the Speed of Business

BIM 360 Integration

Many companies have to manually upload deliverables like PDF’s to BIM 360 in which they have to manually download projects locally, run export tasks and then upload the files to the correct folder,  which can all be automated with IMAGINiT Clarity.

Regular IT adminstration such as project back-ups and storing project data offline can be scheduled and snapshots of Revit projects to share in BIM 360 with other disciplines can also be automated.

New in 2021, Clarity can now migrate BIM 360 projects and show metrics.

If you need to migrate between hubs, the task can be automated through Clarity and any metrics from IMAGINiT Clarity can automatically be imported into the BIM 360 dashboard to be visible for all project stakeholders.

Autodesk Vault Mobile App

Design Consulting Autodesk Vault mobile app Moving at the Speed of Business

Autodesk set to release mobile app for Vault

With the push towards cloud computing, connectivity and collaboration, Autodesk Vault has largely remained a local network environment data management system. It had recently added project sync where Vault data could be synchronised with BIM 360 or Fusion 360 Teams cloud systems, however, lacked it’s own mobile application.

They recently announced a webinar on August 25, where they will be showcasing the new mobile app for Autodesk Vault.

CDE System Architecture

CDE Overview Moving at the Speed of Business

ISO 19650 Common Data Environment

This article on CDE’s for BIM Projects will go through the various types of infrastructures and workflows and how Design Consulting can deploy various types of system architectures to meet your requirements.

Private Cloud CDE Moving at the Speed of Business

CDE System Architecture

System Architecture (or I.T. Infrastructure) for Common Data Environments can be configured a number ways depending on team and stakeholder locations, collaboration and security requirements.

While ISO 19650 compliance is important and having the system and standards in place, what is equally important is having the system architecture to be able to collaborate effectively and securely across networks.

Design Consulting have unique CDE solutions that are ISO 19650 compliant with automation, analytics and user accessibility in mind so stakeholders can focus more on the project rather than compliance and data entry that can also adhere to company security standards.

Three CDE’s (System Architecture) we propose are Local, Public Cloud and Private Cloud. We can also of course have a hybrid approach and have a blend of the above.

The CDE Design Consulting propose consists of:

  • A centralised secure data management system to access project data for archiving, life-cycle management and reporting
  • A secure WIP (Work in Progress) environment for architects, designers and engineers
  • An enterprise system for automating tasks such as deliverables, snapshots and moving files between folders and systems and providing BIM managers with analytics.

Here’s are some diagrams of the three CDE variations:

Design Consulting Local CDE Moving at the Speed of Business
Design Consulting Local and Cloud CDE Moving at the Speed of Business
Private Cloud CDE Moving at the Speed of Business

The main difference between the three is the use of BIM 360 or Revit Server in providing a secure WIP environment.

While Public Cloud is the most open and easiest to configure for WIP Projects, it may not adhere to company security policies. The local and cloud based CDE can also exclusively be run in the cloud as well, with local users accessing the server environment through a private cloud.

Design Consulting can deploy technology at a global or local scale, so if you are looking at implementing a CDE solution from a Technology Service Provider that are experts in BIM and IT, contact us to learn more.
