Twinmotion for Revit

Autodesk announced that they went into a partnership with Epic Games and now Twinmotion is officially included with Revit and it looks like it’s the plug-in for Revit rather than the standalone Twinmotion product.

Autodesk Revit and Architecture Engineering and Construction Collection subscribers should be able to open their Autodesk Desktop App and start downloading Revit 2023.1 and Twinmotion for Revit now.

Change Management

Control design data access with revision management. Audit and track the revision history of your data files from a single location. Reduce the chance of design and manufacturing errors by securely releasing and tracking files throughout the design cycle, helping make sure that team members access only the correct revision of data.

Revision Tables

The process of manually updating the revision tables on drawings can be time-consuming, especially for changes that require simple property updates throughout the drawing’s lifecycle. The Vault Revision Table feature enables you to automatically update a drawing’s revision table data. Since multiple revision tables may exist in the same drawing, the Vault Revision Table feature tracks and updates all tables.

Sheet Set Manager

Sets of drawings are the primary deliverable for most design groups. Sets of drawings communicate the overall design intent of a project and provide the documentation and specifications for the project. However, managing sets of drawings manually can be complicated and time-consuming. The Sheet Set Manager integration enables you to store your sheets in a vault. You can also work on vaulted sheet sets online of offline.

Copy Design

Stop manually recreating or duplicating complex models and drawing sets, saving hours of design time. Using Autodesk data management software, you can copy a digital prototype—including all related files and documentation—for use in a new design. It’s easy to configure the files you want to replace, reuse, or copy.

Rename

Drawing files containing external references or links can be renamed and reorganized without breaking links between parent and child documents. Users are able to specify a new name and new numbering scheme based on a configurable set of tables.

View and Markup

Vault enables easy sharing and collaborating. Multisheet drawings are supported in the markup environment, which provides a rich feature set of tools. Once a markup is created, it can be shared and managed by Vault.

Managing a construction project is challenging at the best of times, but manual and inefficient fabrication workflows can easily drag out any build.

With modern digital collaboration and workflow platforms now available, building and construction managers no longer need to play guesswork with their metal fabrication requirements.

Fabrication Workflow Still Very Manual

Most construction projects use some amount of steel for structural members, perforated sheets for facades and tubing for balustrades.

This construction-level fabrication is a form of “construction manufacturing” and the fabrication requirements are generally unique to the project.

Synch Structural Steel Fabrication to BIM

Advance Steel is structural steel design and detailing software with parametric connections that also does folded plate design and flat patterns.

Over the years, Autodesk has developed a live synch with Revit using Revit’s structural tools, so designs made in either product can be synched to the other, modified and synched back. It started with being able to sync beams and with Revit also having a connection library the synchronisation is even better.

Advance Steel to Revit

Advance Steel allows users to import from Revit, export to Revit or Sync. By installing the Advance Steel extension (add-in) for Revit, users in Revit can import, export and sync as well.

Import/Export

Users either import or export to a .smlx file and once imported/exported, any changes made can be synchronised.

Synchronising Advance Steel and Revit

Once imported, you can synchronise changes and through the dialog box select what changes you would like to synch and the colour coded system shows the user what has be appended (added), modified or deleted

Autodesk Vault Migration Best Practices

A Vault migration occurs where the Vault environment is being migrated from one release to a later release (e.g. 2022 to 2023).

Migrations need to be planned out and not left too long between releases and from the current release to avoid issues with data and config migrations which ultimately leads an increase in the time and cost to migrate Vault to the designated release.

Planning the Migration

If Vault migrations are left too long between releases or is migrated to a release that is more than 3 releases from the current, issues can arise in a migration where there are errors in configurations and database relationships due to:

Double and triple migrations
Autodesk integrating too many changes between releases and the old configuration not being supported in the new release.
Users may miss issues during testing and handover phase, etc.
Release is end of life and no longer support from Autodesk
Forced to do a double migration
Cyclical problem of too many changes between releases (being too far apart) and errors, can’t go forward until issues are resolved.

What is a Double Migration?

Vault can only be migrated within 3 releases. A Vault environment on 2020 can only be migrated to 2022. If the current release in this scenario is 2023, then another migration is required to go from 2022 to 2023.

A triple migration is basically when the Vault release is far back from the desired release. In one example, Design Consulting migrated Vault from 2015 to 2017, 2017 to 2019 and then 2019 to 2021.

The time taken and steps involved to migrate are virtually replicated, resulting in a duplication in costs every time a migration is required, so planning your Vault migration is important to get the best value for money when migrating and also have users take advantage of the additional productivity features in the new releases of Vault and CAD software.

On one hand IT may want to delay the inevitable for as long as possible to reduce their workload on a 1, 2 or 3 year interval, however, the user base can lose out on new features that makes the business more productive and if there are issues with the migration due to unforseen errors in data and configuration, any time savings in IT may be minimal compared to these aforementioned factors.

Vault Migration Best Practices

While things get busy and there may be budgetary constraints, however, if possible, the best practice for Vault to optimise the migrations are:

To ensure backups are scheduled, not failing and up to date
Vault Server and CAD System Requirements are being met
Try migrating within 3 releases to avoid a double migration (2019 to 2021, 2021 to 2022 double migration costs the same as 2019 to 2021, 2021 to 2023)
Stay 1 release behind the latest or wait for the major service pack release to avoid any unforeseen issues.
Test environment – Have a compatible server, job processor (if required), CAD-level workstation, etc. as a test environment for the migration that users can connect to, before rolling it out the migrated Vault release into production.
For larger environments of 50x users or more, having in place a more formal ITIL framework or similar.

Vault Workgroup End of Life – What it means to you?

Vault Workgroup to be Discontinued

Autodesk has announced on the 2nd of May, 2022, that Vault Workgroup will become an end of life product. The key dates are purchase of a new Vault Workgroup Subscription or 3-Year renewal is before 6th of July, 2022 and the last annual renewal is 6th of July, 2023.

In a strategy to consolidate their product stack, they felt Vault Basic, which is free and Vault Professional were the choices moving forward.

In the 10+ years of supplying Vault, Vault Workgroup was the least deployed system of the three in my experience and many chose it for revision control if not needing all the additional features of Vault Professional and lower cost, so it was no surprise this change happened.

Vault Workgroup Users - What Does it Mean for You?

To maintain the use of Vault, companies with a Vault environment will need to migrate their server and clients to Vault Professional before their Vault Workgroup Subscription expires, which is 6th of July, 2023 or their contract renewal date, whichever comes first.

As of 6th of July, 2022, Autodesk will provide access to Vault Workgroup and Vault Professional so you can plan your migration, however, if you need to add new users/seats after 6th of July, 2022, and have not purchased additional seats prior, you may be forced to rush the migration sooner rather than later to give these new users access to Vault.

After the last cut-off date, you will need to have your Vault migrated to Pro and have renewed on a Vault Professional Subscription before your Subscription expires to maintain access to your Vault Server and data.

While you wouldn’t need to do any additional configuration (unless you wanted to take advantage of the additional features), there are some points to consider for planning the upgrade:

When is your Subscription Renewal date?
Are you planning to add more users to Vault?
What release (e.g. 2021) are you on?
Will you also be migrating your Vault to a future release?
How much time do you usually need to plan for the migration (Server requirements, IT, budgetary approval, current projects, network deployments, etc.)?

Export Bills of Materials with JP-Pro for Autodesk Vault

Using the JP-Pro plug-in for Autodesk Vault Workgroup and Vault Professional, users can automatically export Bills of Materials from Autodesk Inventor assemblies through Vault.

JP-Pro is an advanced Job Processor for Autodesk Vault that automates jobs for Autodesk AutoCAD products and Inventor Professional and Microsoft products and one of the functions of JP-Pro for Autodesk Vault is the ability to export bills of materials from Autodesk Inventor assemblies through Vault Workgroup and Professional by using the Job Processor.

One of the unique features of JP-Pro is the ability to export a bill of materials from an Autodesk Inventor assembly (iam) file to either excel, csv or xml file through Vault so users can then use that data in other systems.

It does that by configuring the Job Processor to initiate a bill of material export on lifecycle change state or by manual trigger.

When the user changes the lifecylce for example to released, JP-Pro will send the instruction to the Vault Job Processor to export the Bill of Materials in the configured format.

Users can also initiate an export on maual trigger by selecting or multi-selecting a range of Autodesk Inventor assembly files (iam), RMB (right mouse button) click and selecting BOM export.

Not only does JP-Pro export bills of materials but also exports many other formats, connects meta data between files and sends user notifications.

What's New in Autodesk Civil 3D 2022

The Autodesk Civil 3D 2022 release brings new alignment and ArcGIS workflows, enhancements with pressure networks and for AEC Collection subscribers, new functionality to the Project Explorer.

Alignment Workflows

The better handle complex geometry for ramps and interchanges, there has been new enhancements to connected alignment functionality:

Curve group combinations
- Free Reverse Spiral-Curve-Spiral-Spiral (From entity, end curve)
- Free Reverse Spiral-Spiral-Curve-Spiral (From curve, end entity)
- Free Reverse Spiral-Spiral-Curve-Spiral-Spiral (Between two curves)
Curves grater than 180 degrees
Connected alignments can now be created at offsets from parent alignments to support slip lane and off-ramp scenarios.
A preview option to view before executing the command

Pressure Networks

The color and diameter of the compass can now be specified using options on the ribbon when laying out a path-based pressure network.
The Profile Layout ribbon tab has been updated for path based pressure networks to make it more consistent with the plan layout ribbon.
Spanning labels for pressure networks can now be created in plan and profile views.
PVIs can now be removed from overridden station ranges of pressure network in profile view that are set to static (non-dynamic) state. When selected, the Clean Up PVIs check box on the Pipe Run Profile Settings dialog box removes PVIs from overridden station ranges. You can use the Apply button to preview the changes in the drawing.
A command named RegenPressureSolid was added to regenerate 3D solids for pressure network parts.

ArcGIS

Raster data imported from ArcGIS can now be refreshed from ArcGIS. For more information, see To Refresh Data from ArcGIS.
When importing and refreshing raster data, users can configure the resolution for each raster layer separately.
The number of available resolution levels has been extended for importing ArcGIS raster data from 19 levels to 23 levels.

User Profile

Users can create their own custom profile based on information about their disciplines and job roles.

Support has been added for feature lines in the <None> site (siteless feature lines).
Project Explorer is now launched from the Home tab of the Civil 3D ribbon.
Project Explorer is now available in all languages currently supported by Civil 3D. The assigned language for Project Explorer is determined by the regional language settings in Windows.

Grading Optimisation

For AEC Collection users, Civil 3D now includes Grading Optimisation which works as a preliminary terrain optimisation tool for site designers. It uses design data and automates otherwise repetitive manual grading tasks according to customized object constraints.

Available objects include:

building pads and reveals
curbs
sidewalks
paths
parking lots
ponds

Once these objects are defined with their project relate constraints, Grading Optimization delivers an optimized terrain surface and 3D geometry back into the design tool for further detailed design.

Inside of Inventor, Autodesk has added an Integrated data experience to access and organise all design information in a dockable panel.

Inside of this panel, the designer can see where a design is used before making changes.

The designer can assign an Item and derive engineering BOM information within the environment without leaving the application.

In addition, they can access Change Order information related to the design to understand why change has been triggered & the goal of the change request.

Released Date and Approver Properties

Autodesk has added the Latest Approver and Latest Released Date properties which can be exposed in revision tables and title blocks.

Inventor and Revit Interoperability

The Inventor and Revit interoperability provides the option to check-in and archive Revit files referenced within Inventor assemblies.

In Inventor, Revit files can be used by selecting them in the Open from Vault and Place from Vault dialogs. This gives the designer the ability to update Inventor models that references Revit models seamlessly.

Based on our Vault Pro customer analytics, more than 70% of the customers enable Active directory integration with Vault user & group management.

To align with other Autodesk services, you might be leveraging today like Shared Views, Fusion 360, or BIM 360, Vault 2022 supports Autodesk ID Authentication as an additional option along with Vault User and Active Directory support. With multi-authentication support, an administrator can choose the best way for the Vault users to log in and access the data.

Vault 2022 adds the ability to include profile attributes to user and group profiles similar to user-defined properties on files, folders, and items. These attributes can be user locations, departments, divisions, or any other custom attribute you might want to manage.

These profile attributes can be mapped to Active Directory properties for quick access and easy management.

Lastly, administrators can configure friendly display names inside Vault to quickly identify who created or modified objects. The friendly display name can also be mapped to title blocks and other file properties for improved record keeping.

Replication

Drawing Labeling Enhancement

Advance Steel 2022 has improvements with the display of leader lines on drawings. Users can now attach a leader line at the middle of the text and can also include a horizontal landing line and the leader line can be configured in the Management tools.

Under the Drawing-Labelling category, there are new options to define the attachment position and choose whether labels are to be created with or without a horizontal line.

Camera Enhancements

Use cameras to create views on 2D drawings
Control which objects you would like to include in these camera views
New Select objects for camera tab
Use the Mark objects button to highlight the selected elements in red
Utilize a drawing process to automate the creation of drawings based on these cameras

Drawing Explode Enhancements

Use the batch explode feature in the Document Manager to explode Advance Steel drawings to pure AutoCAD drawings

Document Management Changes to Drawing Registration

If a drawing is moved away from the Details subfolder next to the model DWG file:

The drawing number is empty in Model Browser
When the drawing is moved back to the correct location, everything returns to normal

One-side DXF Files for Plates

Control the number of sides described in NC-DXF files for plates

What's New in 3ds Max 2022

The focus on the new 3ds Max 2022 has been in the following areas: workflows, texturing, rendering and security.

Smart Extrude

The edit Poly modifier now includes Smart Extrude which allows you to extrude with fewer constraints. The adition of the Cut Through command offers further functionality to when Smart Extrude was released in 2021.1

Slice Modifier

The performance of the Slice Modifier has been improved in 2022 with new modelling features based on customer feedback:

Capping – cap open holes
Multi-Axis Cutting – X, Y and/or Z aligned planar slice
Radial Slice – User defined min/max angles
Alignment options – align the cutting gizmo to faces or other references.

AutoSmooth

2022 generates new smoothing data faster and is applicable to Mesh, Poly, Spline or in other modifiers such as Chamfer, Smooth, Edit Mesh, Edit Poly, ProOptimize and other modifiers.

Symmerty Modifier

New features and enhancements produce faster results with more user interactivity:

Multi-axis Symmetry – Planar symmetry on X, Y and/or Z
Radial Symmetry – Quickly duplicate and repeat geometry around the gizmo
Alignment – Reference a face or another object in the scene.

Relax Modifier

The volume preserve option reduces small detail and noise from models while maintaining the shape and overall definition and especially useful in scan or sculpt data.

Arnold

Auto-tx – automates texture files to .tx at render
New Images tab in the Arnold RenderView to apply, remove, re-order or edit to post-process without additional render time.
Light Mixer – Edit the contribution of each light group AOV’s during and after rendering
Bloom has been addedd to the Lens Effect
Noice and OptiX Denoiser are now possible during post-processing.

Viewports

Full-screen, borderless window from any floating viewport. When using presentation mode, all gizmos are hidden.

Bake to Texture

Simplified inteface offers easier navigation and selection of baked map types.

It also includes utility maps such as rounded corners and MAterial ID maps, making in a few clicks what was complex.

Security

The safe scene script protects against malware in 3ds scenes.

The Malware Removal tool detects and removes scripts that are malicious.

What's New in Civil3D 2021.1

Building on the 2021 release with design efficiency, collaboration and data exchange updates, the 2021.1 update has been released and here’s what’s it has inside.

Feature Line Editing

You can use new commands to insert points on crossing feature lines which assists in editing the slope or the grade on multiple feature lines which in turn can set the elevation or point on feature line based corridors at grade or slope.

Pressure Networks

Civil 2021.1 includes new tools for editing pressure networks in plan view and in profile view.

Use the compass when laying out path based pressure networks, there are options in a pipe run profile to modify (add, move and remove) vertical bends and PVI’s and there have been updates to pipe run profile settings such as an override tab and dialog box in the profile selection to include a create from surface option.

Rail Bands

The option to add cant data bands and speed bands to profile views has been included so users can annotate properties that are rail-specific.

Other features

In addition, Autodesk has added reference templates and sheet set data files for Collaboration for Civil 3D with BIM 360, add new Civil 3D objects to ArcGIS and layer controls for bridges.

Autodesk has just released Inventor 2021.1 with some exciting new features and enhancements from feedback provided by the Inventor community.

Middle Mouse Button

Can you believe it? It’s here, something so simple, giving such pleasure… you can now assign the middle mouse button to pan, rotate and zoom, independent of using the control or shift key.

Between Option and Keep Body Tool

You can now extrude between to faces and/or planes. The second option which used to be hidden in the advanced tab is Keep Tool body.

XML Import and Export

Exporting usernames and values can be done via XML from the parameters dialog box, which is handy for iLogic users.

Multi-Open from Drawing Environment

The ability to multi-select parts, assemblies or presentations from the browser and open those files with a right click has been added which will all be opened in a separate window.

Right-Click > Align Section View

You can now align section views by right-clicking and choosing the command which is also available inside the Section View dialog box as a radio button.

Revit Interoperability

The support of choosing which Revit categories to import has now been added to the new Revit AnyCAD functionality in 2021.

Other enhancements have been with the progress bar will appear on the same monitor as Inventor and Revit files with non-ASCII characters will update properly.

Frame Generator

There continues to be improvements to Frame Generator with two new options added in this release. The first one is the ability to know if files are being saved outside your project before saving and the second option is a full path being displayed before saving.

The trim/Extend tool select is now active after you clikc apply, commands such as Insert/Miter/Notch are disabled in Weldment sub-environments.

The tool tip and property panel text has been unified and the cut for end treatments is now correct as the G_L length is now calculated by the frame algorithm and not by start/end planes which caused incorrect lengths when frames were modified.

Autodesk Revit 2021.1 Update is Out Now

The new update from Autodesk offers new enhancements in Revit, Dynamo for Revit 2.6 which includes additional nodes and new gen design studies. There has also been an added interoperability with Infraworks and FormIt Pro.

They have also reduced the number of steps to install and update Revit thus increasing the speed to install.

Dynamo 2.6 for Revit

Dynamo 2.6 has new features such as the Documentation Browser as well as improvred performance. New nodes have been added such as Path of travel, Generative Design and new platform categories across all disciplines have been included to automate design.

Generative Design Sample Studies

Grid, Stepped Grid and Randomise Object Placement sample studies have been included for users to create and validate room layouts design alternatives. A great post can be found here on the topic.

With COVID-19 and social distancing guidelines in place, generative design can be used for such applications.

Formit Converter

Using Formit for conceptual massing and design with complex geometry can easily be converted and imported in Revit with the new 2021.1 release for modelling early stages in design.

Import
